Emily Ballantyne and Tracy Forsythe in Spreading Her Thinly
Thick and thin of parenting
SPREADING HER THINLY Etcetera Theatre
IT’S a rare thing to find yourself laughing at, judging and reassessing your life within the space of an hour. But this highly energetic and exciting play forces you to do exactly that. It’s a play about the pressures of motherhood, not just the social “competitive playground” parenting pressures, but also the pressure that comes from within.
Jenny (Emily Ballantyne) and Nuala (Tracy Forsythe) mistakenly see themselves as different sides of the same coin; one a hard working business woman desperately trying to juggle running a home and an office, the other a full-time parent who has put everything into her children and needs to regain her sense of self.
The characters realise they have more in common than they think and through their friendship manage to find a kind of unspoken support, which in turn leads to life-changing decisions for both.
This small, intimate yet effective production.
Through a series of comic sketches the two actresses morph between 11 overstated but instantly recognisable characters that any woman is likely to meet on a weekly basis – a pushy teacher, a sadistic aerobics instructor or another competitive parent.
This is an honest look at the reality of parenting written by a woman who knows motherhood from experience. If you are a parent, or you know a parent, or you are interested in parenting then go and see it, organise a group of like-minded friends and enjoy a well-earned night out. Until March 15
