Grooves
YOU can’t tell from her picture but VV Brown – starring in Vogue – enjoys her junk food. She confessed to eating fish and chips during her interview with me last week.
I saw VV at Africa Express at the Electric Proms last year – she duetted with Malian diva Rokia Traore – improvising, conducting and orchestrating a song the duo had cooked up only 10 minutes before.
“I was really nervous, this lady was a superstar,” she said. “In Africa she’s like Janet Jackson.”
Among the 100-plus artists there were Damon Albarn and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. VV said: “Even with Flea and Damon who are extremely busy people, we still try every now and then to send a text.” That’s one mobile phone I’d like to get hold of.
• Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley’s guilty pleasure: Kelly Clarkson’s Since You’ve Been Gone. Really Jo?
• Red Stripe Music Awards showcase comes to Dingwalls next Thursday (March12), with Gideon Conn, LR Rockets, 28 Costumes and Mesh 29. The Awards are seen as live music’s answer to the Mercury Music Prize and the final is at the Forum in May.
• I’ve been hearing good things about Rogues – they play the Levi’s Ones to Watch gig at
the Macbeth in Hoxton next Thursday (March 12).
• Second choice for Record of the Week this week was Skint and Demoralised’s This Song is Definitely Not About You – the sentiment of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain, the half talking/singing nature of Carter USM but with a more gentle disarming side – made me smile.
