Chris Cornell on stage at Scala
Cornell and back: Soundgarden star returns
“YOU know my name – I’m the one from Soundgarden.” Chris Cornell made a triumphant but low-key return to the London stage.
On the verge of releasing his third album, Scream (a collaboration with hip-hop legend Timbaland), Cornell seemed genuinely excited to be playing.
When problems with the kick drum delayed the start of the gig, he waded into the audience to be photographed with his fans.
Technical problems solved, Cornell launched into a 13-song set with an additional five for the encore that was notable for the amazing cover version of Billie-Jean and the exclusion of Soundgarden, Audioslave and “Bond-theme” numbers.
Dressed in a simple hoodie, white T-shirt, jeans and trucker boots, Cornell’s wardrobe was as simple as his sound was intense, loud, tight and throbbing; the songs from the new album have a distinctly old-school rock quality to them.
If Velvet Revolver still need a replacement for Scott Weiland, I’ve got just the man. DAN AITCH
