WHAT can I tell you about the Camden Crawl line-up so far?
Blur champion Andy Ross’s new project Bleech have been busy making a name for themselves – I don’t like writing about An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump as they use up my word count. I’m glad to see Sheffield band Skint & Demoralised up there as they are both endearing and gentle. Everyone’s thrilled to see Brakes, and The King Blues are the ones you keep hearing on Radio 1 promising to Save the World and Get the Girl. The Von Bondies are the cool bet; Fight Like Apes have been on these pages before and VV Brown’s on every festival line-up going. See next week’s paper for a full interview with the most hard-working girl on the London scene. Last year I was stuck in a queue outside the Crescent while Florence and the Machine played. The pub must have had some magic sound-proof windows as I could see them playing but couldn’t hear a word. I’ll be planning a bit better this year.
• The Brits were last week, and the NME Awards were on Wednesday. I checked with the organisers from both and yes, no local papers were given access. It’s time for a revolution. These events are held in London to celebrate the best music around. Camden is a hugely rich territory for breeding talent. Today’s Barfly warm-ups are tomorrow’s NME Award-winners. We follow these bands from their very start, we dedicate space to the unsigned, yet we’re denied the chance to tell our readers about their moments of glory.
• And finally, it may not have made our Record of the Week shortlist, but if you want to do a good deed for charity, proceeds from The Saturdays’ cover of Just Can’t Get Enough are going to Comic Relief.
