EMMY THE GREAT - First Love
X-FACTOR winner Alexandra Burke released a cover version of Hallelujah, upsetting many people who hold the song dear to their heart.
Emmy the Great’s new single, First Love, is not another warbling rehash of a great song, it’s inspired by how moving Hallelujah can be. She does make it clear, however, that she is referring to the original Leonard Cohen version, not last year’s Christmas number one.
Emmy has the ability to write clever, charming lyrics without sacrificing or forgetting the need for an inventive tune. She sings: “You were stroking me like a pet, but you didn’t know me yet”, with a voice so sweet it should have the likes of Kate Nash worrying about her future. • Emmy the Great plays ULU on February 27
