A rare audience with the godfather of jazz
PREVIEW - STAN TRACEY
Lund Theatre, UCS
VILLANDRY Jazz in the Lund (UCS) is to again host one of the pioneers of British jazz and a true legend – Stan Tracey.
Stan (pictured left), often referred to as the Godfather of jazz, is returning to the Lund stage after his hugely successful performance last year after more than a 10-year absence from the venue.
Stan’s career has spanned six decades during which he has produced more than 40 albums and created major works such as Under Milk Wood, a recognised masterpiece inspired by Dylan Thomas. He is a master of his instrument, inspiring musicians around the globe.
Now 82 and a CBE, Stan is still producing top-rate jazz and shows no signs of slowing down – gigging with his quartet with the same passion he showed in his twenties.
Throughout his career Stan has played with some of the most prolific and famous jazz musicians around, from Zoot Sims and Freddie Hubbard to Ben Webster, Paul Gonsalves and Tubby Hayes.
Stan will be performing with his Quartet, which includes one of Britain’s most sought after young saxophonists, Simon Allen.
Simon has performed with Phil Collins and Paul McCartney and is in constant demand on the jazz circuit. Bassist Andy Cleyndert and drummer Clark Tracey complete the quartet, and regulars at the series will recognise Clark from his performance in Villandry Jazz in the Lund’s Bebop All-Stars concert a few weeks ago.
•The Stan Tracey Quartet perform at Lund Theatre, UCS, in Frognal NW3 next Thursday at 8pm. £13 (advance), £15 on the door, £7 (students). www.ticketweb.co.uk
