Grooves

BRITNEY Spears is becoming the indie bands’ favourite to cover. Howling Bells on Monday were no exception. Following a stunning set at the 02 Academy Islington, they returned with a brilliant rendition of Britney’s Toxic. Juanita’s unique tones transformed it from a pop song to something a little blacker. NME did well to add Howling Bells to their line-up, although I wasn’t so impressed by support band Asobi Seksu. I’m always wary of bands who strive for the “atmospheric” tag without the substance to back it up.

• Islington Elbow Rooms promoter Clifton Bryan has recently launched a Friday club night for 30 to 45-year-olds after hearing a string of complaints from women in their 30s about being the oldest in the room. He promises it’s not for “old fogeys or the stretchmark brigade”.
At the other end of the scale, guitar-loving grandads, uncles and fortysomethings will now have a night for themselves at The Dublin Castle. The monthly Rock-Till-You-Drop, for all middle-aged axemen, begins on March 11.

• I saw Eddie Temple Morris’s new outfit Losers at Proud last week. Their energetic electro-dance act definitely rocked the young ravers in the crowd, but it was a little too much for me. Full marks for enthusiasm, though.
