Priscillas’ shock tactics with release of 10,000 Volts
Album of the Week - THE PRISCILLAS: 10,000 Volts
HOLLOWAY’S own The Priscillas’ second album, 10,000 Volts, is a slow-burner that’ll imprint itself on your brain and become one of 2009’s classic earworms. The songs are bright, fresh and infectiously catchy. The recent addition of drummer Phil Martini has ensured this second outing hasn’t missed a beat. The album was launched at Madame JoJo’s in Soho last week – a venue that’s every bit as appropriate to The Priscillas as references to Elastica, The Cramps and the New York Dolls are.
The cliches are all there – they bounce, strut, laugh, and seem to have more fun on stage than the massed, boisterous ranks that chant their names from the sweaty moshpit. Singer Jenny Drag is at her prowling, preening best, shoehorned into the tightest of leather catsuits, teasing the crowd with brushes of her perfectly manicured talons. Guitarists (Guri and Kate) add the perfect layers of a sound that’s as deep, rich and tight as you can imagine.
While their recent trip to a New York showcase didn’t result in the record deal they so richly deserved, this album (and the accompanying live shows) prove that The Priscillas have honed their craft to levels beyond that which even their early promise suggested. Get the CD, see them live and tell everyone about them. DAN AITCH
