The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB Published: 5 February 2009
I HAD hoped to bring you a review of Lily Allen at Koko this week, but it appears local newspapers are not worthy of tickets to her highness’s big London return – never mind that Lily chose to grace Camden with her notorious comeback.
The Fear, the new single by the self-labelled “weapon of mass consumption”, may talk about the horrors of tabloid obsessions and the madness of fame, but it seems this is just another case of life imitating art imitating life. Our oh-so-real Lily, who for all I know is a very lovely person, is surrounded by spotlight-obsessed hangers-on and fawning PRs who have no interest in the little people. So I can’t tell you how it went – you’ll just have to have read it in the very same papers that pick her to pieces on a daily basis.
Take it to the chorus: “I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore...”
n A moment to remember the folk legend that was John Martyn, who died last week. He used to live on a barge outside a bar I waitressed at. I remember three things: his sandals, his unruly hair and the time I was bringing his lunch out to the barge and the chefs told me to share any narcotics he gave me as a tip. To be clear, I received no tip of any kind! Here’s to you Mr Martyn, may you continue to sing songs from a fluffy barge in the sky.
n If the words Black Hearts Ball appeal to you then you’re probably just the kind of person the Old Queen’s Head is looking for. The pub plays matchmaker tomorrow (Friday) claiming “to honour all the gooduns who’ve found themselves a little lost looking for love”, exacerbated by the approach of St Valentine’s Day. With Brad Baloo of The Nextmen with special guest The Hoop spin hip-hop, soul, funk and breaks.
