WOO-Hoo! Tommy Reilly won Orange Unsigned Act’s search for new talent on Sunday. Everybody sing: “Give me a call, you’ve got a phone don’t you...?”
I just hope he doesn’t go the way of last year’s winners, Envy and Other Sins, who seem to have disappeared.
• THE fantastic Florence and the Machine was as stunning as ever at last week’s Roundhouse Brits Awards. She’s already won the Critics’ Choice award but the rest is still to play for.
This year’s nominations are so varied: AC/DC, Neil Diamond, Fleet Foxes, MIA, Seasick Steve, Santogold and Take That are all up there. Gabriela Cilmi’s launch party performance of Sweet About Me was only worth listening to when she burst into Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire. It’s also worth noting that while Scouting for Girls have made the Brits nominations list for Live Act, Single and Breakthrough Act, they are also competing against The Jonas Brothers for Worst Album and Worst Band in the NME Awards announced on Monday. I’m pleased to say the lovely Miles Kane, featured on this page mere weeks ago, has made it to NME’s Sexiest Male list. The Astoria is up there for a posthumous Best Venue nomination.
• I SAW Bitter Things play the Macbeth in Hoxton on Thursday. Their Velvet Underground undertones stirred up an admiring crowd.
Check out their showcase at the Barfly on February 13.
• THE hottest, edgiest night –The Playground – is taking sleaze-glam to Brick Lane’s 93 Feet East on Saturday. Ulterior, Turbowolf, The Oscilation, The Language and Messengers are all on the bill.
• WHY are Goldie Looking Chain back?
Their Asbo 4 Life show hits Dingwalls on March 24. Surely their gimmicks are well over with – let them go back to making amusing comments on vacuous TV countdown shows.
