JOSEPH AND THE JELLIED EELS - Wonky Wasted Souls
LET’S be honest. I picked this one out because of the band’s name and their equally intriguing and alliterative album title.
Don’t be fooled by the Jellied Eels reference – there’s no Chas ’n’ Dave knees-ups here – it’s just a nod to their London upbringing.
And what I found when I listened to this Islington band’s 21-track album was a pleasure. No walls of noise, just gentle, light songs with plenty of space to hear them.
Their tales cover, in their own words, “heartfelt stories of soul-destroying, detested jobs, cravings, cigarettes, cider, city-boys, gutsy-girls, mundane-meritocracy, monkeys, misunderstanding and malice”. And they don’t wear skinny jeans.
