• Barry Lyndon STANLEY Kubrick used the talents of 19th-century novelist William Makepeace Thackeray to create a masterpiece of visual storytelling.
The 1975 film, starring Ryan O’Neal, scooped four Oscars and tells the story of an Irish rogue fighting and flirting his way through the battlefields, chop-houses and bedrooms of a Europe racked by the intrigues of the upper classes. It is said Kubrick used the art of Gainsborough to frame each shot, and the complexity of the camera work bears this out. Re-released by the British Film Institute, this is a rare opportunity to see on a big screen one of Kubrick’s detailed works.
• The Broken THIS classy horror tells the story of Gina, a woman who glimpses herself drive past her on a London street. In equal parts intrigued and terrified by the fact her exact double exists, she follows the doppelganger up to her flat – and from here on in things get mighty weird.
Spooky stuff.
• Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist THIS New York-based teen rom-com bangs the drum quite successfully for doing your best to make the most out of the later adolescent years.
It tells the entertaining story of Nick, the heartbroken (and straight) musician in gay band The Jerk Offs.
Blue from splitting with his lady friend Tris, he is dragged out of his mooching ways by his girl chum Norah. The pair hit Manhattan for a crazy night of shared musical experiences and the odd cocktail.
I won’t say it holds a candle to my generation’s version of a 24-hour adventure to change your life (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) but it does have a certain charm.
