TUAN MAC - Little Johnny Rotten
IF TIM Burton is the Aesop of filmmakers, Tuan Mac is the Tim Burton of solo artists.
Her crestfallen story of Little Johnny Rotten could have fallen straight from the pages of his book of twisted poems, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy.
Tuan’s malevolent tones against a gentle soldier’s drum march and slow carnival piano set the scene for a tragic portrayal of the bag of bones that is orphan Johnny Rotten. But it’s not all sad. Once he’s dead and buried under concrete slabs, he turns into a diamond tree.
This is not a pop song and probably out of the comfort zone of many readers but is compelling nonetheless. One for those who would have worn black, read books and sat at the rejects table at an American high school in a parallel world.
Camden singer Tuan was offered a record deal last year but rejected it in favour of sticking to her off-the-wall style of writing.
Her album My Secret Love, is available at www.tuanmac.com
• Tuan Mac plays Soho Revue bar on February 2 and Sir Richard Steele pub, Haverstock Hill, on February 11.
