PREVIEW: THE BACH PLAYERS
St John's Downshire Hill
On Saturday January 31 The Bach Players will perform the sixth concert in their series at St John’s Downshire Hill.
The series, which started in September 2007, is steadily developing a committed audience of followers, which is unsurprising given their friendly, unforbidding atmosphere.
With drinks served at the start of the concert, to be enjoyed during the music-making, and the interval acting as a meeting ground for people from the locality, the series is becoming an unmissable date on the borough’s social calendar.
In this concert, The Bach Players will be linking JS Bach to Haydn via Bach’s sons JC, CPE and WF. Specifically, the programme explores changes of style in composition in the second half of the 18th century. They will continue their investigation of fugues by playing the canons and ricercars from one of JS Bach’s most dazzling works, the Musical Offering.
The Bach Players issued their first CD, Bach Arranging and Arranged, last autumn. The CD was recorded in St Michael’s in Highgate and published by Kentish Town-based publisher Hyphen Press. It can be purchased at www.hyphenpress.co.uk and at the concert. The Bach Players perform at St John’s Downshire Hill, NW3, on Saturday January 31 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00). Tickets £15, £12.50 (H&H card holders), £5 (full-time students). For advance bookings and information, telephone 020 7272 7651.
