I WAS at the indie disco that was Dirty Pretty Things’ DJ set at Proud on Friday. Didn’t they split up last year? Anyway, pleasant though it was, I still don’t get the whole celeb DJ set thing. We like them for their music and aside from the vaguest curiosity as to their record tastes, who cares that they can put records the right way up on the turntable? It’s also a little bit sneaky the way “DJ Set” is always in small print – that’s how one of my reviewers was stung recently. Foals DJ at the Lock Tavern on Saturday; Skin from Skunk Anansie is at Last Days of Decadence (Feb 6) as is Sophie Ellis Bextor (Feb 13) and Hadouken! are at Proud (Feb 5).
n MY spies spotted yesterday’s disgrace Jonathon Ross and wife Jane Goldman at last week’s Doll and the Kicks gig at Water Rats. And King of Misery, Morrissey, was spotted at their last appearance in Camden. They’ve now scored a support spot on Morrissey’s tour and will play 93 Ft East (January 31) and Proud (February 5). Look out for an interview next week.
PS: Overheard in the Water Rats queue: Gossip #1: “You’ll never guess who’s in there – (drops voice confidentially) Jonathan Ross“. Disappointed friend: “Oh, I thought you meant someone interesting.”
• All may be not lost for doomed club The End, which closes on Saturday. We hear the owners have been asked if they want to buy it back.
