PREVIEW: JOE STILGOE Pizza Express Jazz Club
JOE Stilgoe is often referred to in the press as “the son of Richard” – as in songwriter, lyricist, philanthropist and lover of anagrams Richard “Cats and Phantom of the Opera” Stilgoe.
But while Joe’s eminent dad may well deserve the column inches he’s given every now and again, it seems high time that the young jazz singer is allowed to stand on his own two very musical feet.
With a formidable piano technique and a vocal range that adds considerably to his arsenal, Stilgoe’s career started with classical training at the age of five. His parents, both professional musicians, spotted his talent at the piano and encouraged him, with partial success, to practise – sometimes resorting to bribes.
Following university, a year playing on cruise ships ensured that Joe learnt every song in every key while nobody listened.
Back on shore, he played with anyone who’d take him, from backing a drag artist in Bournemouth to playing Christmas carols for a firm of lawyers three weeks after Christmas.
On Monday and Tuesday next, in Pizza Express Jazz Club, Joe and his band will be playing a rather more timely Christmas concert.
He has spent the past few months piecing together his “ideal festive show”, and as well as getting you in the Yuletide mood, Joe will also be performing tracks from his recently released album, I Like This One.
After a storming three nights at Ronnie Scott’s back in October to launch the album and a string of performances during the London Jazz Festival, this is a great opportunity to catch a star in the ascendancy – which seems quite appropriate, given the timing...
• Joe Stilgoe plays Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, W1, on Monday and Tuesday at 9pm. £15. 0845 6027 017.
