Mixing it up: jazz in the key of Norwegian 'punkt' at Kings Place
PREVIEW: SCENE NORWAY - PUNKT
Kings Place
THE London Jazz Festival reaches its eclectic climax this weekend, as Kings Place – the home to Scene Norway – is given over to the experimental musings of Punkt.
Usually held in the Norwegian harbour town of Kristiansand in late summer, Punkt was founded in 2005 and this year’s relocation to London offers a rare chance for jazz enthusiasts to sample the cream of Norway’s high-minded, trail-blazing jazz scene.
This festival within the festival turns the two main halls at Kings Place into a live remixing experience, with audiences invited to move from live room to remix room, where the sets just heard are reinvented by – among others – sampling wizard Erik Honoré.
In the live room, musicians including Nils Petter Molvær, Sidsel Endresen and Eivind Aarset, combine in various
formations to create stunning sonic landscapes.
After these 45-minute sets, the audience cross the foyer to the Alpha Room (Hall 2) where these sets will be fed through to Honoré who, together with other members of the collective, take the original material and completely
re-invent it with additional live contributions.
By this method, reflective acoustic sets can be transformed into pumped-up electronica, while high density, full-on performances can become stripped down to the essence of their idea and re-mixed into intimate solos or duos.
Perhaps not one for the jazz purists out there, but an intriguing prospect for anyone willing to run with the remix.
• Punkt is at Kings Place from November 20-23 at 7.30pm. For tickets and further details of the performance, see www.kingsplace.co.uk
