Grooves

HOW many more of our beloved venues will be crushed in the coming decade?
It has been on the cards for a while but last week The Astoria, in Charing Cross Road, officially became the latest victim of progress – it will be demolished to make way for another train line.
Camden’s Electric Ballroom has been under threat for years – again from railway developments – so what’s next?
Will they suddenly decide to build an overland line straight through the Forum in Kentish Town? Will the beautifully restored Roundhouse one day make a stunning reception for an extended Eurostar link? Or maybe we shouldn’t complain. Without trains how would we get to Paris to see Springsteen or to Brixton for The Pogues?
So I say it’s time for demands.
If they want to crush our rock history we want promises, assurances they will run the trains late enough that we can stay for the encores and still make it home – if there are any venues left.
n I saw an unusual fella giving the performance of his life at Proud the other night, to a sadly sparse audience. The looming figure of Jonjo Feather – hair standing up on end, distorted voice and crazy strutting – made for compulsive viewing, so might be worth looking out for.
