VERA Friere has her own unique take on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and she expresses it through her art – ceramics. The results are quirky and immensely engaging.
Vera, 34, is Portuguese and is, among other things, the ceramics tutor at the Hoffman Foundation for Autism’s day centre in Wood Green. She herself has Asperger’s syndrome, and her spiritual perception of the world is tightly woven into her art.
And that world is influenced by the tensions between good and evil. Her two levels of positive influence are revealed gods or invisible gods. And these affect humans, animals and vegetation, as does Cumbaya, an evil spirit. Fortunately, when the going gets rough, Vera’s gods come to her aid. For an intriguing glimpse into Vera’s lively and humorous world, characterised in more than 100 ceramic figures, take a look at her work (or even buy some of it) at her show at the Garden Suburb Gallery.
