Nitin Sawhney - LONDON UNDERSOUND
I HAD hoped to interview multi-talented composer, producer and musician Nitin Sawhney but, as his diary is full, I’ve settled for his latest work.
London Undersound is a chilled interpretation of life in the big city featuring a cast of guest contributors, including Ojos de Brujo, Anoushka Shankar (Ravi’s daughter) and award-winning regular British-Asian singer Reena Bhardwaj.
Easing in with Camden Town boy Natty’s laid-back Days of Fire, the album slowly picks up pace, but only for a minute, with the understated drum ’n’ bass track Bring it Home, featuring Imogen Heap.
Paul McCartney’s contribution, My Soul, is the only out-of-place choice – his voice carries too much baggage. Much more fitting is Barcelona nine-piece Ojos de Brujo’s lazy flamenco beats on Shadowland. A solid chill-out album that avoids the trap of being merely background music.
As a bonus, the album features 16 line drawings by sculptor Anthony Gormley.
