LEARNING to draw is really a matter of learning to see,” claims Kimon Nicolaides in his seminal how-to book, The Natural Way to Draw. This month’s reissue of the 1941 masterpiece by Souvenir Press in Bloomsbury could not be better timed. It coincides with the national Big Draw campaign, a free week-long festival of all things drawing with events at St Pancras International and the Wellcome Collection.
Transports of Delight, the project at St Pancras, embodies Nicolaides’ philosophy. Visitors are encouraged to see the station from a different angle through special “Walk and Draw” architecture, engineering and design tours from October 11-17.
The eloquent architect Alistair Lansley, the man who oversaw the
station’s redevelopment, is expected to be a highlight. Cartoonists from the Independent, the Guardian and Private Eye will impart the benefits of their wisdom to curious members of the public in the annual Battle of the Cartoonists on October 18.
It’s a two-hour marathon showdown between some of the country’s finest caricaturists. And if you spot any battered copies of The Natural Way to Draw poking out of the artists’ kit-bags, don’t be surprised. SIMON WROE
