Welcome return of Spex and rock ’n’ roll
REVIEW: X-RAY SPEX Roundhouse
PUNK isn’t dead, it just smells funny, especially when there’s 3,000 rockers crammed into X-Ray Spex’s long-awaited Roundhouse comeback gig.
Singer Poly Styrene ditched the braces and tin hat for 1940s chic and a sparkly beret, but still screamed “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!” like it was 1977.
Sax-driven anthems such as Identity and Germ Free Adolescents soon won over the fans who’d been annoyed by the £30 ticket price.
Poly’s daughter joined the band for an emotional encore, while in the crowd a cockatoo-haired boy perched on his dad’s shoulders and punched the air. There’s hope for the next generation yet. CLAUDIA ELLIOTT
