Gotye’s sample opportunity to shine
REVIEW: GOTYE Scala
THE Scala was packed to capacity, as London’s Australian contingent came out in full force to see Gotye, the sample-crazy, Aussie multi-instrumentalist.
Gotye embraced the audience with anecdotes and, with his followers in the palm of his hand, opened with the Arabian-flavoured The Only Way.
He took the crowd on a musical odyssey with a set containing myriad musical samples, visuals and vocal effects.
The energetic performer pounded bongos and beat drums, before resting at his keyboard to showcase his powerful vocals.
Highlights included the electro-based and sample-heavy Thanks For Your Time, and the piano-led Worn Out.
After whipping the crowd into a frenzy, Gotye closed with the Motown-inspired learnalilgivinanlovin, complete with a chomping bassline and shrill choruses, and left the audience in a spin and humming to his tunes. DAVID WOODE
