Members of Siglo de Oro, a new chamber choir performing at Hawksmoor Church on Saturday
Revisiting the Renaissance
PREVIEW: SIGLO DE ORO
Hawksmoor Church
SIGLO de Oro, a new chamber choir of young professional singers will present a concert of breathtaking Renaissance choral works in the beautiful setting of the recently renovated Hawksmoor Church, St George’s Bloomsbury on Saturday.
The aim of the group – made up of singers from the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity College of Music, King’s College London, St John’s College and Clare College, Cambridge – is to give passionate yet disciplined performances of Renaissance music. It takes its name from the Spanish phrase used to describe a “golden age” of the arts that began in the late 15th century and lasted for some 200 years.
Music by Spanish composers of the period, and in particular that of Guerrero, Victoria and Morales, will form a key part of the group’s repertoire but further to this the name expresses their wider dedication to music of the era.
The programme presents music written for and performed in the royal chapels of Renaissance Europe. Among the rarely-performed musical gems are Nicolas Gombert’s tragic Lugebat David Absalon, Jakob Handl’s ethereal Pater Noster and Jean Mouton’s astounding Nesciens Mater.
The concert will encompass a variety of styles, chosen to demonstrate the range of powerful compositional approaches employed by royal musicians at this time.
• Tickets for Saturday’s concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are £10 (£5 concessions) and
