COLOURED LIGHTS: A MUSICAL CELEBRATION OF KANDER AND EBB Jermyn Street Theatre
CABARET, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Chicago – the hit musicals of John Kander and Fred Ebb are legion.
Prod anyone of a certain age and the Broadway songwriting team’s most famous melodies will pour forth unabashed. And everybody, but everybody, knows their theme to the Martin Scorsese film, New York, New York.
What most people forget or don’t know about, however, is all the other gems hidden away in the less well-ventilated corners of their repertoire: The Rink, Flora the Red Menace, Woman of the Year and Curtains.
Director Tim McArthur and musical director Stephen Hose attempt to redress the balance in their cabaret show Coloured Lights: A Musical Celebration of Kander and Ebb at the Jermyn Street Theatre over the coming fortnight.
They have enlisted suitable help for the task from Sarah Redmond, Marc Joseph and Laura Armstrong (Mr McArthur also features), whose combined credits cover a raft-load of West End hits including Les Miserables, Annie, Animal Crackers, Little Shop of Horrors and Grease.
McArthur and Hose promise audiences a “kaleidoscope of human emotion – love, loss and laughter”; whether or not their musical revue will have you reaching for your handkerchief, it looks like it could be a lot of fun.
