VISAR Hyseni has packed a great deal into his 30 years. A Kosovan from Prishtina, he was on course for a life of academic excellence in his homeland.
Then, on New Year’s Eve 13 years ago, he was left in a coma after sustaining a severe head injury in a car accident.
The one-time grade-A student’s marks slumped as a result of the injury by the time he returned to university and he had to leave.
He then came to London for medical help and has been here ever since, turning his life round.
“In some ways I am grateful for my accident, because I believe that during my time in a coma, I became a genius,” he says.
It made him realise he wanted to be a painter. He has overcome his disabilities, attended arts courses and has now built up an impressive portfolio of work.
His bright colours and bold brush strokes are reminiscent of his inspiration – Van Gogh – and his relentless determination show through in the works.
• Visar’s World exhibition is at Kakadu, 87 The Stables, Chalk Farm Road, every evening 6-10pm until September 7
