The Pretenders: Chrissie Hynde still top brass
REVIEW: THE PRETENDERS
Koko
THE lights went down, the crowd hushed and the queen of rock strode on stage.
In skin-tight jeans and patent, knee-high boots Chrissie Hynde towered above her henchmen to rightfully claim her iconic status as an ageless icon of punk.
But this performance, to mark the last night of the iTunes festival at Koko, was a much more complex and sometimes more low-key mix of bluegrass, rock, and country as the band unleashed tracks from their forthcoming album Break Up the Concrete.
The Pretenders generously included Brass in Pocket, Talk of the Town and Back On The Chain Gang, managing to keep such vintage tunes as fresh and current as ever. She may be 56, but Ms Hynde still oozes that rock’n’roll aura, provoking admiration from female fans secretly harbouring dreams of one day being just that cool.
