CHECK out this week the super South American flick El Bano del Papa.
The plot goes like this: The Pope is due to visit a Uruguayan village and our hero, Beto, who scratches out a living smuggling mod-cons in from Brazil, believes there must be a way of making a few bucks out of His Holiness’s day trip.
While his neighbours are raising funds to sell burgers and the like, Beto believes he has the answer: build a public loo in his back garden and get the devout to spend pennies.
It’s on at the Curzon Soho and is thoroughly enjoyable.
And if you haven’t gone to see Man On Wire yet, it’s a must: French high-wire expert Phillipe Petit is the hero of this documentary about the challenge of crossing the chasm between the two World Trade Centre towers on a piece of wobbly, two-inch thick wire. The act itself is incredible, and this film, directed by James Marsh, does it justice.
Meanwhile, word reaches POTI that Hampstead’s Everyman has been handed a £13,000 grant from the UK Film Council to improve the movie-going experience for people with hearing or sight difficulties. The Phoenix, in East Finchley, has been given £3,000 from the same body.
