The Opera Festival - Music for the head and the heart
PREVIEW: Tête à Tête –
THE OPERA FESTIVAL Riverside Studios
Bursting with world premieres and works in progress that intrigue, entertain and push at the boundaries of opera, the Tête à Tête Opera Festival – currently taking place at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith – explores what and where the future of opera could, and should lie.
Now in its second year, the Festival provides a unique opportunity to experiment, attracting artists from a broad range of disciplines to try out new ideas and ways of working.
Highlights still to come include acclaimed mezzo soprano Lore Lixenberg (star of Jerry Springer – The Opera), in the tale of a medieval nun as desperate housewife in Brian Inglis’s Song of Margery Kemp (August 8), while The Shout’s Rebecca Askew and Melanie Pappenheim perform Orlando Gough’s Flam (August 13 and 14).
The fate of a new cheese cracker hangs in the balance in SharpWire’s operatic satire set in the world of advertising; You Must Have This (August 9 and 10).
Visual artist Terry Smith, sound artist Ian Dearden and soprano Linda Hirst take Hogarth, Vivaldi and Handel as the starting points for a new video installation, Lost & Found (August 14).
Tête à Tête associated ensemble Chroma develop a tale of puppets, passions and illusions in Petroushka, and sugar crystals possibly get their first starring role in a new work by Ellen Parry, Catherine Kontz and Alexia Anastasiadis: Ingrained Deeds, Bird Seeds and Other Granular Material (August 7 and 8).
With tickets for three shows in one night at just £12.50, plus free debates and Tête à Tête’s 10th birthday party to enjoy, the festival has something for everyone.
