Left exhibition from artists with one vision

THERE might not be much space left for the teachers in the staff room of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) this week.
Fifty left-wing artists from around the world, including a sculptor from Haiti, a Chilean refugee and an Egyptian photographer, will take over the Bloomsbury venue for the Left in Vision 2 exhibition from Thursday.
While left is definitely the word, the art is not all directly political, but all of it challenges the values of a society based on exploitation and driven by profit, says lead curator John Molyneux.
Now in its second year, the show is organised in conjunction with the long-running Marxism Festival.
It has grown dramatically in size since last time, says Mr Molyneux, a lecturer and writer on art history, and encompasses the whole spectrum of disciplines: abstract painting, traditional portraiture, surrealist sculpture, art and documentary photography, and film-making.
The freelance photographer Yasser Alwan, who met Mr Molyneux at a Marxist conference in Cairo, will be joined by Haitian street artist Andre Eugene, Hector Lopez-Kern and East End sculptor May Ayres.
