Therapy for a ‘negative type’
COLOURINGS Old Red Lion Theatre
ANDREW Keatley’s wonderfully written debut play Colourings is a captivating exploration of cocksure 24-year-old Mark (Alex Price), struggling to curb his temper and maintain the relationships in his life, whether it be with his patient girlfriend Emily (Polly Findlay) or his eccentric parents.
“You’ve got it, I’m the negative type,” exclaims volatile protagonist Mark, to his psychotherapist, Dr Houghton, as he attempts to unravel the reasoning behind his troubled mind.
Underlying tensions from his youth rise to the surface through the sessions with Houghton, culminating in an unexpected twist.
Layers are tugged at throughout the process as his parents grapple with his innermost thoughts. The seamlessly tight scene changes and snappy script maintain a steady pace throughout.
James Perkins’ set design lays bare the chaos of memories and events, quite literally, with a cluttered construction of shelves, full to the brim, bric-a-brac filling every space imaginable.
It’s a thoughtful portrayal of a stubborn young man, battling with his inner demons, ably rendered by a dynamic cast.
Newcomer Alex Price impressively delivers a star performance, resulting in nothing less than an engaging characterisation, wonderfully complemented by the natural connection with Polly Findlay.
Tight dialogue, sprinkled with wit, cynicism and star performances make this a must-see piece. Until July 5
