THE biggest party the north side of the Euston Road swings into action again this week.
Reggae Roast, put together by Kentish Town man-about-town James Harper, is set to soak the ceiling at The Grand Union in Kentish Town Road on Saturday.
Although the reggae and chicken fest is more of a Sunday afternoon chill-out on the whole, for one night only it’s time to get your party shoes on and dance until 3am, although the price stays the same – yes, it’s free as always.
The community spirit of the event is the secret behind its success, and the reason why it has mushroomed from a one-shot thing with 50 people to hundreds turning up each month. It is also, no doubt, why the organisers have been asked to play the festival circuit. Check it out at www.myspace. com/reggaeroast and get down there. It starts at 2pm.
Another community spirited event to warm the cockles of the heart – also free – is the Parliament Hill bandstand. The musical institution was reinstated last year despite local opposition, and has been a massive success. It reminds you what live music should be about – a family day out with kids lined up at the front of the stage to watch the band (or at least that’s what it was like on Sunday at the Afro Blue gig).
A local band, more than 100 people crowded around to catch their South African sounds. From next month there will be Friday evening performances as well as the regular Sunday.
