PREVIEW: RISE FESTIVAL Finsbury Park
IT shouldn’t take many rivers to cross to get over to Finsbury Park next month to catch Jamaican reggae hero Jimmy Cliff at the annual Rise festival, organised by the London mayor’s office.
A free festival introduced by former mayor Ken Livingstone to campaign against racism in our great city, Rise has gone from strength to strength, attracting some spectacular acts including local stars Sway and Graham Coxon.
This year’s local addition to the line-up are Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, a retro rock and roll three-piece band from Kentish Town comprising the Durham siblings.
Other acts sure to excite include Brazilian electro band Cansei de Ser Sexy – “tired of being sexy” in Portuguese – and 1950s soul star Sharon Jones with her band the Dap-Kings, who recently dazzled at the Jazz Café.
Big beat dub stars The Dub Pistols are also in the line-up, set to perform alongside their Sunday Best label-mates Specials’ frontman Terry Hall and Fabric club MC hero Rodney P.
Previous years have seen the stars sizzle on stage – expect nothing less from London’s premier street festival.
• Rise takes place in Finsbury Park on Sunday July 13 from 12pm until 8.30pm
