Theatre Reviews | In The Wings | The Marvellous Adventures Of Mary Seacole
TAKING a story by Lust, Caution writer Eileen Zhang as his inspiration, Camden playwright Simon Wu has crafted a gripping tale of forbidden passions in 1930s Shanghai. A Pilgrimage of the Heart at the Etcetera Theatre explores the love of a father and daughter which threatens to spill onto dangerous territory, and a mother who must choose to ignore it and preserve her family or face it and destroy any semblance of a happy life. Until June 22.
NOT one to take “no” for an answer, Mary Seacole ignored the snubs of The War Office and Florence Nightingale and formed her own field hospital on the battlefields of the Crimean War, justifying the Jamaican healer’s place in the history books, but her deeds remain largely unsung. Cleo Sylvestre’s one-woman show will change all that though. The Marvellous Adventures of Mary Seacole is at The Rosemary Branch Theatre from June 17-22.
