PREVIEW: ROSSINI AND GOUNOD Guildhall School Theatre
THE Guildhall School’s opera department presents a double bill of Rossini’s L’Occasione fa il Ladro and Charles Gounod’s La Colombe today (Thursday), June 14, 16 and 18. Written in a flurry of inspiration between 1812 and 1813 along with three other operas, Rossini’s one-act burletta is a tale of stolen luggage, mistaken identity and love.
Gounod’s comic opera dates from 1860 and centres on Countess Sylvie, who, jealous of her rival Amynte’s pet parrot, tries to woo an impoverished aristocrat into selling her his prized dove.
Both operas will be sung in the original language with surtitles.
