DID The Review “jack its booty” to Kool Herc in the early days of hip-hop?
Did it urge Grandmaster Flash to “cut faster” on the “wheels of steel” way back when? No, it did not.
Most of the world was taken by surprise by the stratospheric growth of hip hop: what began as a few guys rapping over cut-up old records has emerged as a global phenomenon.
To celebrate those early, heady days, Bar Vinyl in Inverness is hosting the PYMCA Gallery’s Wildstyles – classic and rare photographs from the “old skool” era by Normski, Janette Beckamn, Eddie Otchere, Naki and others.
Alongside the exhibition is a hip-hop art competition. The 30 best entries selected by judges get an exhibition of their own, and the winner receives the latest Pentax camera.
It’d be bad to miss it – and that’s bad meaning bad, not bad meaning good.
• Wildstyles is at Bar Vinyl in Inverness Street, NW1, until June 16. Competition entries exhibited until June 22. The exhibition is free, open 11am till late
