MADONNA’s been to Koko before. Four years ago she stopped traffic outside the Mornington Crescent building, and planted a massive Madonna sign on top to celebrate 20 years in the music business which had all started at... Koko.
Now, the woman who famously staged the most expensive gig ever seen in Camden Town – at £300,000 a song – is set to return.
I told you I’d tell you more about a massive music festival I’ve heard is coming to Camden in July – and here it is: The iTunes Festival. And it’s not just the Queen of Pop who will be making an appearance: David Bowie and REM are also reportedly playing.
Considering Sir Paul McCartney dazzled crowds at last year’s festival, held at the ICA, it’s no surprise the biggest names in the biz are lining up to take part in this year’s groundbreaking festival.
At a time when there really is a glut of festivals, it’s good to see a venue in Camden making them seem relevant again.
In February I interviewed the good people at Koko. Although they never breathed a word of this to me, I was already impressed with the way they had turned around the fortunes of the once down-and-out Camden Palace, largely used as a destination for house clubbers. If I had known then they’d secured a festival of this magnitude, I’d have been staggered.
Camden’s musical legacy goes on – Walk of Fame gold star for Koko!
