REVIEW: FAMILY FRIENDLY CONCERT - HAMPSTEAD AND HIGHGATE FESTIVAL Lauderdale House
THE sun may not have been shining on the final day of this year’s festival, but there was no shortage of warmth and good cheer at Lauderdale House on Sunday morning.
Fiona Patterson (flute) and Hannah Stone (harp) – both recent graduates of the Guildhall School of Music – entertained parents and children with an hour-long programme including works by Ravel, Bach, Ibert, Zgraja and Debussy.
The event was part of a regular series at Lauderdale House in which children are invited to try out the experience of concert-going.
The performance was excellent – as one would expect from Guildhall alumni – but what made it particularly enjoyable was the relaxed atmosphere that the “family” element brought to the morning.
Several of the children attending were learning instruments, and after the performance it was charming to see some of the younger audience members take such a strong interest in Ms Stone’s harp – and she was only too happy to talk them through the principles of her “strange guitar”.
Katherine Ives, general manager of Lauderdale House, told me that the relative youth of performers in the series is another positive factor. “These young musicians can act as role models for their young audience, and hopefully encourage a new generation to take up an instrument,” she said.
• The next Family Friendly concert at Lauderdale House, in Waterlow Park, Highgate, is on Sunday June 1. Jeanine Thorpe – a 13-year-old violinist and winner of the Remember Enescu Competition – will perform works by Elgar, Saint-Saens and Bach. 11.30pm, £7 (£5 concs)
