Knockout variety show helps boxers

PREVIEW: THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT
New Players Theatre

UNUSUAL as it may sound, ice-cream and beer are the body and blood of the music hall scene.
The spirited singing, dancing and all-round entertainment of the variety shows began life in the pubs of the East End.
In the mid-19th century, as their popularity soared, the Swiss entrepreneur Carlo Gatti poured the fortune he had made bringing ice-cream to the public into music hall venues across London. One of which, under the arches of Villiers Street, in Charing Cross, survives as The New Players Theatre.
So there is a touch of serendipity to David Power’s variety show next Sunday: the 74-year-old pianist learned his trade at the Golden Hinde bar in the East End and it is the Players Theatre 60 years later that will reap the benefits of his experience.
Mr Power has assembled a talented troupe of opera singers, classical soloists, and music hall favourites. Russian classical pianist Inna Zhdanova, singers Cindy Jackson and Angela Sweeney, and the Pearly King Larry Barnes – “a true performer of the old time music hall” – will grace the stage, with more Pearly Cockney royalty in attendance.
Children from DanceArt Hazelmere will perform from The King and I while Lady Carolle – “the Queen of the Stars” – assists the evening.
All proceeds go to causes close to Mr Power’s heart: the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Unit at UCLH and the London Ex-Boxers Association (Power is an ex-boxer himself).
St Martin’s Lane Hotel, Eclipse Hairdressers, Sarastro Restaurant in Drury Lane, Fortnum & Mason and Harrods are among the names providing prizes for the raffle.
By the looks of it, you’ll be very lucky to get a seat!
