Grooves
PROUD. Everybody loves it. It’s the place credited with making Camden cool again – alongside the Hawley Arms – and it reopened after a seven month hiatus last Thursday.
So what’s the new place like? Set in the much bigger Horse Hospital within spitting distance of the old bar, it’s huge. And it looks something like how I imagine the Copacobana did (once New York’s best nightclub).
But that didn’t stop the place getting rammo. Filled with individual rooms where you can presumably order your own drinks (rather than go through the ordeal which is the bar), Proud Camden is clearly on its way to becoming the trendiest place in the borough.
Was it the great bands or the bonhomie of the outdoor terrace that drew the beautiful people back, week after week at the old bar in the Gin House?
We’ll soon find out – the new bar has a smaller terrace but a much bigger area to watch the bands, something that was always a problem before.
Of course there are some in Camden who wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole – the goths for one – but are those groups a dying breed? Perhaps. You’re more likely to see Louboutins tottering down the high street than the Doctor Martin’s of old.
Camden isn’t the grungy place it once was – Proud moving into the Horse Hospital is symbolic of the shifting sands of the area.
Many of those queueing on Thursday left after giving up hope of ever getting in – Proud is here to stay.
