The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Get your glad rags on and get ready to Crawl

PREVIEW: CAMDEN CRAWL APRIL 18-19
Various venues

SO, this is the big one. The weekend when Camden rocks, literally.
Two days. Twenty-five venues. One hundred and thirty new and established acts. One ticket.
Yes, that is what the Camden Crawl is about. And yes, it will be heaving.
Grooves has done various previews for the Camden Crawl, which takes place next Friday and Saturday, but this time, we’re going all out.
Last year Amy Winehouse, in the full flush of fame and success with Back To Black, did an amazing set at the Dublin Castle. And then she walked home, back to her Camden pad with Blake. She was even nice to the papparazzi. It doesn’t get much cooler than that.
But could it? Although the secret headliners haven’t been announced yet, they’re set to be special (and likely to perform at either The Electric Ballroom, Koko and of course, the Dublin Castle, so know where you’re going come 10 o’clock).
In the past three years they’ve all been locals, Graham Coxon, Supergrass, and Winehouse. Who could be next? Ms Dynamite? She would be a good call in my book.
The point is, you SHOULD get your glad rags out, you should forget the queues and you should buy your two-day ticket (49.20). Although if that’s a bit too much for you – and my stamina tends to sag after “too much fun” - there’s always the one day ticket (£29.70).
But the headliners do not deserve all the attention. What else is getting us jumping up and down with excitement? Well, there’s the stonking performances expected from the likes of the Fratellis (Friday), Rosie Oddie and the Odd Squad (Saturday), and a whole host of cracking discoveries-to-be-made (both days).
But one of the most intriguing things coming up this year is the outdoor underage festival.
The Red Bull Bedroom Jam, as it is named, is the first time the Crawl have held an underage stage for the under 18s, and quite right too.
It is a well known fact that some of the biggest music fans are the teenage audience, more likely to download your new single within minutes of its release than some musically jaded office temp saving up to go on holiday with her boyfriend.
So hurrah to the new stage, being held in Inverness Street.
And it isn’t just for the audience, it’s also for underage bands. Friday is Indie day, featuring six bands, including Hadouken! and Bombay Bicycle Club, while Saturday is Rock day and will be headlined by Reuben.
It’s free and runs from midday to 6pm, but you should register (you plus one) at www.redbullbedroomjam.co.uk.
The only thing I would say about this year’s Crawl - nobody mention the fact its now called “Red Stripe Camden Crawl” but do mention that the it is supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust.
