WHILE Tibet is very much in the public eye, with the demonstrations over Chinese behaviour towards the mountain state, it seems opportune to point out a documentary due to be screened next month at the Tricycle in Kilburn.
Called Tibetans: A Life In Exile, the documentary examines the difficulties confronting Tibetans living away from their country and having to adapt to modern life yet still stay in touch with their culture.
Director Rob Bradstock has created a film with stunning cinematography, shot in the Indian Himalayan town of Dharamsala. It features interviews with the Dalai Lama and other exiles, and discusses the effects things like secular education are having on this unique nation.
It is to be screened on Sunday May 18 at 3pm. For more details, call 020 7372 6611.
Meanwhile, one of my favourite cinemas, the Prince Charles off Leicester Square, is hosting a one-off screening of the film Brick Lane (Sunday April 20, 5.15pm). The cinema offers cheap seats – and has a licence to sell beer.
Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane caused a bit of a stink when it was published: the themes of love and life in London’s East End Bangladeshi community attracted a fair amount of attention.
It has translated well into celluloid.
Sarah Gavron – daughter of Nicky, Labour’s candidate for Barnet and Camden – directed the film and will be there for a question and answer session afterwards, with proceeds going towards her mum’s campaign.
