Soul singer Mavis Staples is to play the Barbican
Star Mavis and Dr King’s day: yes, it Stax up nicely!
PREVIEW: MAVIS STAPLES Barbican Theatre
IF you ever get the chance to see a singer who was signed to the legendary Stax soul label, don’t miss the opportunity – there aren’t too many of them left keeping the old recipe alive.
Thankfully, Mavis Staples keeps on keeping on. Not only that, she has a new album which is crisper and rootsier than any of her modern-day equivalents.
To recap: Staples is the gospel powerhouse behind unforgettable classics Respect Yourself and I’ll Take You There, recorded with her just-as soulful relations under Staples Singers.
Mavis and her sister Yvonne, who is also booked in for a date at the Barbican on Tuesday night, were more than just the music: the family fought for equality too.
In a week when the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination is in the mind, Mavis, who was a close friend of the civil rights leader, can be celebrated for being among those who made a stand when it mattered most.
New talent Jhelisa provides the support.
