Grooves
THIS is it. The big one. Turnmills’ last weekend, and they’re all sold out so it’s flog your granny time and go on eBay.
Last time I checked, tickets were going for £122 so you may need to throw in some family silverware too.
Chances are most people are unlikely to go to such extreme lengths so a happy alternative to the Turnmills mayhem would be Swedish House Mafia at Koko on Sunday.
I must say it seems a big shame that Turnmills is closing just to be turned into flats and offices, the fate of many decent venues which, according to a report by Ken Livingstone, are ultimately worth more as property or a theatre even if they’re a profitable business.
Obviously a club is not the same as a live music venue, which was the focus of his report, but it is still sad to see something much-loved become something you can find in any street in the country.
The report publicised the threat facing venues from more profitable uses of the land, and Turnmills seems a case in point. Tottenham Court Road’s Astoria, which has seen every famous face in music stride its famous floorboards at one stage or another, faces a similar fate.
On the subject of the Camden Crawl, look out for competitions and a weekly preview of different artists each week.
