Ida’s career is all set to Barfly
PREVIEW
IDA MARIA
Barfly Camden
NORDIC pop princesses have a healthy track record on British soil.
Often first revered in their home country, they then board a boat to Britain and gain international acclaim – think Bjork, The Cardigans, Abba.
This is exactly what will happen to Ida Maria, a tiny Norwegian indie songstress with short hair.
Hey, I give it to you straight.
Already renowned for her no-holds-barred performances that often end in blood being drawn, usually her own, Ida’s mouthy attitude has earned her the moniker the “fourth Gallagher brother”. Catchy I know, but you hadn’t forgotten about Paul had you?
If Strokes were fronted by a woman, it would be she, but while equipped with a
rock’n’roll growl, she can also do Bjork-style off-beat ingenue, as demonstrated on Any Given Day.
But I like her best shouting or just happy, such as on I Like You Better When You’re Naked, a teenage ode if ever there was one, or Blondie-inspired modern-day love song Louie.
A frontrunner for commercial success, she’s one of just a handful of up-and-coming artists to win the support of indie radio station Xfm, who are bringing her to the Barfly stage as part of their excellent Xposure series.
She may be a self-proclaimed weirdo but she’s running her own record label and has gigs booked up until summer, so although she sings “Oh my God you think I’m in control”, I would say most definitely yes.
And this won’t be the last time you’ll see her in these streets – she’s booked in to make a big splash at the Camden Crawl next month.
See her in the flesh before she’s propping up every trendy music show worth its skinny jeans and asymmetric hair.
Did I mention she’s the cutest thing you’ll see in Camden on Tuesday? • Ida Maria plays Barfly, Camden, on Tuesday at 7.30pm
