SUPERGRASS
Roundhouse
IT'S hard to believe it’s been 13 years since Supergrass burst onto the UK music scene with their first album, I Should Coco – all cheek, Chopper bikes and youthful exuberance.
Their cartoonish image and knack for songs which celebrated teenage adventures – such as Caught by the Fuzz, and the summer anthem Alright, marked them out as instant stars.
Six top-10 albums later and the band have put away childish things.
Through a combination of stomping tunes and staying power, they have firmly established themselves as one of the UK’s most popular bands with their own brand of pumping British pop-rock.
Over the years they’ve won a Brit, NME Brat award, an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Music prize nomination.
It’s all a far cry from the band’s humble Oxford beginnings as Theodore Supergrass, after failing in the job market as factory worker (Gaz Coombes), plunger-dishwasher (Mickey Quinn), dinner lady (Danny Goffey) and astrophysicist (Robert Coombes).
This is their first UK date featuring all four band members since bass player Mickey Quinn’s accident last summer, when he fell out of a window while sleep walking.
They will be performing tracks from their new album Diamond Hoo Ha, and will hopefully belt out some of their oldies as well.
Their live shows have been described as “joyous” and this shouldn’t disappoint. SIOBHAN SHEERIN
