British outing for Lalo’s Count Fiesco
PREVIEW
FIESQUE Bloomsbury Theatre
UNIVERSITY College Opera, one of Britain’s most ambitious semi-professional companies, is set to perform a spectacular British première of Edouard Lalo’s first opera, Fiesque, based on a play by Friedrich von Schiller, the 18th-century German dramatist and poet.
Set in Genoa in 1547, the opera follows the struggle between the republican Count Fiesco and the city’s ruling Doria family.
It received its world première in 2006 on Radio France, and stage première in June 2007 in Mannheim.
University College Opera is renowned for its fresh, exciting and energetic interpretation derived from collaboration between the young prodigies of opera, experienced designers and directors and the exceptionally dedicated and talented UCL students who form the orchestra and chorus.
It seems fitting that University College Opera, long recognised for its flair with less mainstream operas, gives Fiesque its British première.
David Curry, who sings the title role, Fiesque, has an impressive list of roles, including Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly for the BBC, Marco in The Gondoliers with the ENO. And there is no shortage of talent in the wings – the show’s set designer, Becs Andrews won the Linbury Biennial Prize for stage design in 2007. • UCO perform Fiesque at the Bloomsbury Theatre, Gordon Street, WC1,
