PREVIEW: THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS All Hallow's Church
THE renowned Highgate Choral Society will perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at All Hallow’s Church, Gospel Oak, on Saturday at 7.30pm.
The choir will be joined by Catherine Hopper (mezzo), Robert Johnston (tenor) and Benedict Nelson (baritone).
The Dream of Gerontius, with its immediate appeal and emotional power, is generally recognised as one of the greatest choral works ever written – even the mighty Richard Strauss proclaimed Elgar as “the first English Meister”, after Gerontius’ German première in 1901.
Something of a slight on the rest of English music, but high praise nonetheless...
