Grooves
LONG gone are the days when guitar bands were cool. This week, the Brits went pop.
Back in the 1990s – not that I remember it or anything – it was all Oasis and Blur, and didn’t they give good controversy? Even if it was all just a bit of publicity, at least their 1995 spat at the Brits was entertaining.
Flash forward a bit and it’s Arctic Monkeys, and they’re all too cool for school. Last year they couldn’t even be bothered to turn up – did they think they were too good for the biggest bash of the year?
If there’s one thing you can say for 2007, it was the year of the comeback. Take That – another 90s band, hurrah – have been nominated for four awards, and have never been above thanking the fans. Even Kula Shaker, another 90s off-kilter guitar group, are back on the tour trail.
Arctic Monkeys take note – you won’t always be youngsters, indifferent to publicity. The tide turns for all.
Being gracious is key to remaining popular. Kylie, probably the nicest popstar of our time, has just been given an OBE and is venerated as a pop icon of our time.
Either way, my money’s on Leona Lewis and the catchiest single of the year, Bleeding Love. To think, she was holed up in an X-Factor house in the heart of West Hampstead (it’s in Cleve Road, pop followers) little more than a year ago.
