Northern girls just do it better
PREVIEW- ADELE
Bloomsbury Ballroom
THERE does seem to be a glut of Brit girls doing tea ’n’ biscuit songs – about something mundane like toothpaste (Kate Nash) with gritty urban accents – since Lily and Amy came out and showed them how far a bit of north London attitude could take you.
But Tottenham-born-and-bred girl Adele has not let that put her off. Despite the fact she’s also admitted she was something of a girlhood Spice Girls fan, she’s not your usual wannabe either.
You’ve got to pinch yourself to remember that Adele, hailed critics’ choice by organisers of the Brit Awards, has only released one single, and is only 19!
But her star turn at the Brits Awards nominations ceremony at the Roundhouse on Tuesday – showing off her deep, older than her years jazz voice – only served to prove why she was also voted winner of a BBC6 music poll about the act “most likely to succeed” in 2008.
Her debut album, 19 – named after her age – comes out on January 28, just a week after her second single, Chasing Pavements, is released.
Although there’s more hype around her than a Tom Cruise movie – and I’d normally steer well clear of both (unless it’s Top Gun) – she could well disprove the rule, hype = over-exposure = career suicide.
Adele, slightly rounder than the average popstar, seems to be the real McCoy.
One listen to her tunes on her Myspace site will convince you to buy a ticket to her gig at the Bloomsbury Ballroom at the end of the month – it’s gonna be a classic.
